Park Patrol. That was Domino’s job. A beautiful black and white Akita, Domino patrolled the streets of his Highland neighborhood and Columbia Park for nearly eight years. He made his appointed rounds four times a day, rain or shine, accompanied by his assistants, John and Carissa. Everyone in the neighborhood knew Domino by name, though his owners were mostly known only “the people with Domino.” Kids ran up to him calling out “Domino, Domino!” Though he loved all kids, he was partial to pretty girls. Carissa’s well-being was Domino’s special charge. He was an excellent judge of character, frequently putting himself between her anyone he was suspicious of.
Over the years, he attended festivals in the park; Easter being his favorite. He took the responsibility of scouting out leftover eggs very seriously. Music from the park required him to make extra patrols, knowing he was expected. Once he broke up a mugging in the park. He patrolled the streets making people feel safer and guarded his beloved masters and home, earning more friends than most of us do over a lifetime. He was beloved of many. We said a sad goodbye to our beautiful boy Christmas Day. We’ll miss you, Domino.
So sorry to read this, Linda. We lost our beloved Berkley-boy, almost fifteen-years old, in late October. The loss is still sharp and I feel such sadness for your family over Domino. They are family and we love them so.

The Rainbow Bridge
inspired by a Norse legend
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together. X x

What a lovely story. One of my presents this year was a framed photo of my dog who died this past year. He was much like Domino in some ways. We bought him a collar that said ‘security’ on it because he was always on guard and never let other dogs fight or break the rules at the dog parks. I miss him as you must miss Domino.

I am sorry and totally feel with you! Perhaps it is not the same. But two days before Christmas we lost our first and oldest guinea pig. It was lying dead in the enclosure. Our Jacky was special. He was more like a dog. He came running when we appeared always ran around us while cleaning up. He was full of life up to his last breath. I was in tears for hours although he was just a little guinea pig. But a bond between animals and men is always a connection far beyond words.

We made it an effort to get a new guinea pig for the other one left. It looks like they get along pretty good already.

That should help through the grieving for his friend. They love as surely as we do.

For sure! When Jacky’s buddy died 2 years ago he was obviously grieving. It was so sad to see this little guy suffer. Also it took him and new Elvis a while to become friends. But in the end they sticked together and had two wonderful years together.
