A Tour Through Blogland

I am honored to have been invited by a very dear blogging friend at “Vancouver’s Visions”  http://vancouvervisions.com/ to participate in “A Tour Through Blogland”, also known as “The Virtual Blog Tour Award.” Just so everyone knows, I am delighted to have been picked to participate with all the fine bloggers associated with this award.

2.Answer four questions about your creative process which lets other bloggers and visitors know what inspires you to do what you do:
•What am I working on at the moment?

I am working on two projects that go hand in hand right now, a long and short project. I just started a short-term project, an E-book entitled Vagina, Boobs, and Poop based on hilarious mishaps and things my 80 something mother has said and done.  I am posting a few posts to garner interest for my book.  I have been working on my long-term project for about two years.  It is the story of my mother’s growing up in East Texas during “The Great Depression” through her early marriage, though there is definitely nothing depressing about it.

•How does my work differ to others in my genre?

I am working hard to focus on the thought processes of the character at different stages as she matures, from the time she is a toddler all the way through.  It is possible for me to do this since I have heard my mother’s stories so many times I feel as though they happened to me.

•Why do I write/create what I do?.

I come from a long line of storytellers.  The most precious times of my life have been spent listening to family stories. I can’t bear to think that these stories, treasured over several generations could be lost.  I feel as though I know the people in these stories.

•How does my writing/creative process work?

Rather than working from a specific outline, I jot my ideas down and write them up as I go.  I make no effort to keep them sequential, nor do I force myself to stick to a story if I am not satisfied. I just move on and come back later.   I do have a chronological outline I work them into later as my work progresses.

And then write a one-time article which is to be posted on a Monday, (the date supplied by your nominator). (This article can be in the same post in which you answered the 4 questions.

I don’t know when I learned to read.  Before I started school, I remember trying to decipher my “Little Golden Books”, asking Mother, “What does C-A -T spell?”  Remembering a little more each time, one wonderful day I realized making those words mine opened a whole new world.  Reading was the most wonderful thing that had ever happened to me.  I’d never be lonely or bored again.  Scarfing down every book in sight, I attacked my older sister’s reader, labels on canned peaches, even tags on mattresses.  My first trip to the local library was magical.  I dropped to the floor, determined to read every book in sight.  My amazement at learning I could take five books home with me was better than Christmas.  I whizzed through them when I got home, taking them to bed with me that night.

Over the next two weeks, I nearly wore them out.  I dreaded returning them, till I learned I could take five more in their place.  I was in heaven.  When I was in the first grade, I was allowed to join “The Library Club, proudly walking to the library with my sister every Wednesday afternoon after school to spend one whole hour in the children’s section  on my own as she disappeared into her area.

I am forever grateful for the gift of reading.  It schooled me for my next great passion:  writing!
