Mother was stuck taking us everywhere she went, even to buy a new washing machine just days before her fourth baby was born. She never asked anyone to keep us since that would have insured she had to return the favor and keep someone else’s monsters in return, probably some of our killer cousins. She was always on guard against that. We followed her into to appliance store. It was maddeningly dull to me and my Brother Billu. We wanted to ride in the dryers and jump on the doors, but she put a stop to that pretty quickly, making us sit on our hands with our backs to each other wher Phyllis could watch us. Eventually, she made her choice and went to sign the mortgage papers. I knew all about mortgages! I was an avid fan of Mighty Mouse! He’d saved Sweet Alice countless times when Oil can Harry was about to do her in all on account of that danged mortgage, and here my own sweet mother was about to sign a mortgage. I set up a protest, as only a righteous eight year old can do!
“” Mother, Mother, don’t sign it. We’ll lose the house se! Please don’t sign a mortgage!”
She was infuriated, as only an overwrought pregnant woman can be, snarlingly at me hatefully through clenched teeth. “. Go over ther and sit down. If you say another word, I’i’ll tear you up right here in this store!”
Wow, clear words!!! But I love the concerns of you as a little child.

Oh yes, looking after other people’s children. Mum never asked anyone to look after us, but she got lemoned on more than one occasion by one individual.
‘I’m just going to the shops’, or ‘I’m having my hair done’, you know the routine.
This woman never collected her kids until AFTER teatime, knowing Mum would feed them with us. Dad put his foot down after three days out of five coming home to a houseful of unrelated-to-him- kids and told her in no uncertain terms that his wife (Mum) was not a babysitter nor dinner lady and she wasn’t to use her as such ever again.
She didn’t.
Instead, she approached the woman two doors down!

I had an aunt who needed a rest. Her husband brought her six kids under ten for Mother to keep. Mother had five under thirteen. Mother lost it and through a screaming fit at my uncle. Daddy Didn’t know she could do such a thing.

I can remember cousins coming to stay (one at a time though) when I was very young. I always seemed to be left out of their ‘secrets’ with my sister, the biggest of which turned out to be learning how to crochet (I didn’t understand it either!!)

Mother was a patient woman and didn’t want to go to Hell over killing a kid.
