This is my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Perkins Holdaway as a young woman at her home in Volney, Virginia. Her father was a prosperous store owner.

Don’t I look like a wacky, happy little kid? See how that skirt strap was twisted. I thought I had to take my skirt off when I went to the bathroom and had trouble fastening it back.
