Four-Legged Hero is Honored – #WATWB

I love this story.

This is Memorial Day weekend in the States, a time when we stop to pay tribute to the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is not a day to honor veterans, but when thinking about the men and women who have fallen, it’s hard to ignore those who serve today.

As I was searching the news yesterday, I stumbled across a story about Sgt. Stubby, a service dog from World War One, whose interesting and unlikely military career began in New Haven, Connecticut. Sgt. Stubby is going to be honored this weekend:

“Pvt. J. Robert Conroy befriended the stray pup in New Haven as the 102nd Infantry Regiment trained on the Yale University campus in the summer of 1917. Conroy smuggled Stubby aboard a troop ship to France and hid him in the coal hold.

Congratulations.

Why is it that, when someone commands us NOT to do something, we are invariably tempted to do it anyway – even if we weren’t interested in doing it in the first place?

I am a law-abiding lady, but a terrible rule-breaker. Who can help it when people with whistles are telling you:

You can’t swim with a face mask in a public pool.

Don’t walk on the grass.

Don’t try to go through a yellow light.

Don’t walk across the street on red, even if there are no cars coming from either direction.

Don’t enter the subway as the doors are closing.

Don’t sit on that wall – it’s dangerous.

Is it that the rules are petty or that we feel bossed around and mildly insulted by the micro-managing of strangers?

September is my birthday month, and thankfully, I’m turning another year older.  I am now firmly into my fourth decade–or as my husband corrected–fifth decade, because you count 0 to 10 as your first decade…..okay—whatever!  The bottom line….I am forty-something and well into the journey of my life.  And, with this understanding, I started considering the passing years and what “age” means to me.

As someone who’s interested in wine, I completed an introduction/level I sommelier wine course with my husband about a year and a half ago.  When I began writing this post, I started thinking about aging in wine and aging in life.  I thought about  the grapevine’s journey versus our own journeys.  Young grapevines have vigor and brightness, but it’s the older vines that are the most sought after to make the best wines.  This is partially because the vines take on the nuances of their environment:…

A few weeks ago, I decided to coax cuttings of a flowering cherry tree into an early performance in order to speed up spring. Persuading plants to flower out of season is known as forcing.  You can either trim branches from your yard or buy them from a florist.  There are a number of flowering trees and shrubs that you can choose for your trimmings.  I have a flowering cherry tree in my front yard.  So, that’s what I used.  However, flowering dogwood, redbud, flowering dogwood, saucer magnolia, flowering quince, or forsythia work well, too.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1.  Prune on a mild, late-winter day.  Branches are more pliable when temperatures are above freezing.  Most spring bloomers form flower buds on the previous season’s growth.

2.  Look for crowded branches that are no more than 1/2 inch in diameter, with numerous round, plump flower…

Chris at The Story Reading Ape has done an absolutely brilliant job of designing the perfect cover for it too.  He was so helpful and accommodating to me, despite my inexperience in these matters and problems with my e-mail!

At the moment, it is available at CreateSpace, but by tomorrow, it should be available on Kindle and shortly afterward Amazon.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I had been encouraged to publish a collection of my poems, and now I have finally done it! I do love to rhyme things and this book is pretty much a compilation of some of my favourites! I have even included some of the raunchier ones to add a little extra spice!
