When my son was about three weeks old, my eighty-something great-uncle made a special trip over to visit him, unwrapping him, looking at his fingers, toes, and earlobes. After a full-body exam, he pronounced. “”He’s a healthy-looking boy. I believe he’ll make a fine man if he Ives and does well.” I was shocked, never having considered another possibility.
What a hoot! I can just picture this!

Makes you wonder if he put his brain in gear before opening his mouth. Not the sort of comment you want to hear about a baby!

Yes, it can be shocking… but old people have a lot of experience on their backs, though it was not very nice to say that

My wife’s grandmother would always say something like, “May your children live and be well,” much like what your great-uncle said. Maybe it was a generational thing.

That was more positive.
